Inspiration for the piece comes from the concept of random fortunes on the internet that, in itself, do not mean anything aside from the meanings instilled into them by individuals. Japanese fortune slip, also known as omikuji, was chosen as the specific focus for the project due to the interactivity of the practice in Japan. During New Years, citizens in Japan would visit shrines to pray as well as to receive fortunes. It interested me how the practice of fortune telling is so ingrained in the Japanese culture.
